Stock Margins Can Make or Lose You A Lot of Money

By Richard Moran

You can use someone else's money to leverage your capital for stock purchases. That is buying on margin and is the same as buying other things on credit. The difference comes to the control you have over your investment - with the stock market you are at the whims of the day-to-day market fluctuations. Many of the recent financial problems drove the market down and therefore lost money for those who held their stock on margin. These circumstances left many stocks at all time slows.

Buying Stock Outright

Cash is still the best way to purchase any investment. Buying stock on margins will necessitate the price of the stock rising enough to not only cover your cost and fees, but enough to cover the interest charges imposed by the stock firm offering the margin purchase. Unless your crystal ball is a good one, and your stock picks take off, that is a lot of pressure for the stocks price to rise. Of course if the price falls you are still responsible for that loss plus any interest due on the original purchase price. You may owe quite a bit more than the stock is worth when you sell.

Buying on Margin

In the margin situation the brokerage house is basically acting as a bank and loaning you the money to purchase the stock. All this is done only on paper of course. If for any reason you don't keep up with the interest payments the broker merely will take the ownership of the stock back, and you may still owe them money, even if the stock did go up. There is very little risk for the brokerage, although many did lose a lot of money in the recent stock market crash. However, even with that most of the money lost was not from marginal stocks but from more exotic forms of investment.

Knowing the Stocks you Buy

Realistically, if you pick all stocks that go up you are going to make money. Many people have a feel for the market any make their living doing just that. Once you get into margin buying the market becomes more than just a simple investment. You can no longer buy a stock and look in the Sunday paper to see how you did the past week. The potential for loss is high, and you may have to "bite the bullet" and sell a stock before you lose too much on it. Most successful investors use margins sparingly, many times only when they have good knowledge that a stock will rise significantly in the short term.

On Margin or Outright

It comes down to your mindset when it comes to risk. If you will get ulcers worrying about the money you owe on margin it might be a good idea to stay out of the market all together, or buy mutual funds and let someone else worry about the return. Paying cash leaves you in a more flexible position while the margin gives you greater potential. The most important thing is to do your research and invest with your head not your heart. - 23208

ETF's For You To Use

By Mike Swanson

As of June 2007, SPY ETF has become the largest exchange stock trading fund in the world. It is sponsored by PDR services LLC, which in itself is a subsidiary of American Stock Exchange LLC. It does, however, have some considerable competition on the market. The most formidable ETFs holding stock picks are listed on the New York Stock exchange as IVV, RSP, SH, RSU, SSO, RSW, SDS, UPRO and SPXU.

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a method of trading on stock exchanges. In principle, an ETF is worth the same as the stocks they represent. This is valued at whatever those assets are worth over the day's trading. As of 2009, there are 680 exchange-traded funds on the US markets, accounting for $610 billion in assets.

SPDRs were launched in January 1993 by the Boston asset manager, State Street Global Advisors. They were devised by Nathan Moss, an American Stock exchange executive. In May 1995 they were joined by the MidCap SPDRs. They are now listed on the New York Stock Exchange as "SPY" and as "MDY".

State Street Global Advisors, the Boston asset manager, launched SPDRs in January 1993. They were formulated by Nathan Moss, who worked on the American Stock exchange. In May 1995, MidCap SPDRs were introduced to the market. They can be found on the New York Stock Exchange, listed as "SPY" and "MDY".

They were conceived in the late 1980s, and had their origins in Index Participation Shares (IDSs). These were briefly traded on a variety of stock exchanges. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange then served a lawsuit that stopped sales of IDSs.

Following this the Toronto Stock Exchange began trading its own version of Index Participation Shares. These were so popular that the American Stock exchange started looking for something similar that could pass US regulation. The result was the ETF. The Standard & Poor's Depositary Receipts (SPDRs) became the first ETF in the United States. They are often referred to as "spiders" or "spyders". - 23208

Rectangles - Long Trading Strategy with CFDs

By Jeff Cartridge

The rectangle is sometimes referred to as a channel or a consolidation. It is a very well known and easily recognized chart pattern that has been used by many successful traders over the years, including Nicolas Darvas who made over $2 million in the stock market using a variation of the rectangle he called a Darvas box. A rectangle is formed when the price action is contained within two lines. Both the top line and bottom line are close to horizontal and the two lines are parallel.

Rectangles, Breakout Unclear

Rectangles show no clear tendency to break up or down. Despite the fact 54% of the patterns break out to the upside this is likely due to the fact the market tends to move higher. Around half (56%) of these breakouts are profitable and on average the profit per trade is 1.15% over a period of 12 days.

Refine Your Entries

When you look at the performance of a rectangle the pattern works better when the market is rising. Trading rectangles when the market is in an up trend or consolidating improves your trading results. If the sector and the stock are consolidating or rising this also improves the performance of the pattern.

Rectangles are sensitive to the length of the pattern with breakouts that occur between 10 and 35 days, from the start of the pattern, performing the best. While the pattern breakout works best in the range specified, it is not important if the pattern breakout is early or late in the pattern.

Volume is important with rectangles ensure that the volume is supportive of the breakout with the volume as the share rises more than volume as the share falls. Avoid patterns that have lower highs prior to the breakout or the last turning point is formed by a single outside candle.

Rectangles Deliver Strong Profits

By following these simple rules profitability of trading rectangles can be improved substantially. With an average return per trade of 1.89% in 13 days and an extremely high hit rate of 71% it is understandable why many traders are drawn to the rectangle.

Note: Statistics for this article have been provided by Patterns Trader after analyzing over 60,000 chart patterns on the Australian market from 2000 - 2008. - 23208

Forex Trading Tips 5 Success Tips

By Mark Green

Forex trading tips are not hard to find, but the ones that are actually good are. With the internet flooded with information, it can sometimes be hard to find quality tips. From trading experiences I have arranged some tips that may be applied to any trader.

First of five forex trading tips is dedication. In order to achieve success, a trader must be dedicated to their trading. If one spent time in research and world news they would be dedicated. Dedication leads to progress and progress leads to success. How much one trader wants to succeed is dependent on the level of dedication.

Second in the forex trading tips is a traders persistence. Don't give up before you give it some time and a chance to produce results. A trader going into forex with an over night success mind frame is a sure way to get them self in trouble. Thinking short term may drive a trader to rush trades and loose more often. Put yourself in the mindset of long term income.

The third of forex trading tips is finding methods that work for you. Testing out different strategies of trading for some time before changing them is important. Long term results are what you need to determine whether a method words or not. Remember that no trader wins all trades, it happens. Calculate your trades on a rolling average. Make more winning trades then losses and your doing good.

The fourth of forex trading tips is to have proper money management. Traders must manage money properly to achieve a long term success. Sinking entire trading accounts into a trade is a high risk bad move. There is no such thing as a "sure thing" so don't ever put all your eggs in one basket. Using small margins to your advantage and being strict will keep you in control.

The fifth of forex trading tips is researching and managing your trades. It is always a good idea to do some research on the market and its conditions, and world news before you even consider making a trade. Doing the scalping method is the best way for new traders. Scalping with forex can be a quick way to filling up your trading account and getting yourself to larger trades. Thinking long term is the best mindset for forex.
